Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Fault (Bank 1)

What does this code mean?

Severity : High

P0340 indicates a fault in the camshaft position sensor circuit on bank 1. The engine control module compares this signal with the crankshaft signal to identify cylinders and synchronise injection and ignition. Without a reliable signal, starting can take longer and the engine may go into limp mode.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on.
  • Long cranking or no start.
  • Stalling or rough idle.
  • Loss of power or limp mode.
  • Higher fuel consumption.

Possible causes

  • Faulty camshaft position sensor.
  • Damaged wiring or connector.
  • Short or open in the supply or ground circuit.
  • Damaged camshaft reluctor.
  • Incorrect timing, for example a jumped belt or chain.
  • Engine control module fault, which is rare.

Diagnosis and repair

  • Inspect the sensor connector and wiring.
  • Measure supply, ground and signal with a multimeter or oscilloscope.
  • Check cam and crank correlation in live data.
  • Verify mechanical timing if the signals are out of phase.
  • Replace the sensor if needed, clear the code and road test.
