Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Fault

What does this code mean?

Severity : High

P0335 indicates a fault in the crankshaft position sensor A circuit. The engine control module uses this signal to know engine speed and crank position so it can time fuel injection and ignition. When the signal is missing or implausible, the engine may stall or fail to start.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on.
  • Hard start or crank with no start.
  • Sudden stalling, often when the engine is hot.
  • Tachometer dropping to zero or behaving erratically.
  • Misfires or hesitation under acceleration.

Possible causes

  • Faulty crankshaft position sensor.
  • Damaged, corroded or unplugged sensor wiring or connector.
  • Incorrect air gap between sensor and reluctor ring.
  • Damaged or contaminated reluctor ring or tone wheel.
  • Short or open in the sensor supply or ground circuit.
  • Engine control module fault, which is less common.

Diagnosis and repair

  • Inspect the sensor connector and harness for chafing and corrosion.
  • Check sensor supply, ground and resistance with a multimeter.
  • Watch the sensor signal while cranking using live data or an oscilloscope.
  • Inspect the reluctor ring and the sensor mounting.
  • Replace the sensor if the signal is still missing, then clear the code and road test.
