P3401
PPowertrainCylinder 1 Deactivation/Intake Valve Control Circuit
What does this code mean?
Severity : MediumP3401 reports an open circuit or control fault in the cylinder 1 deactivation system, intake valve side. On engines with cylinder deactivation, a solenoid stops the valves opening to save fuel at light load. The control module can no longer drive this circuit correctly.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Fuel saving mode (cylinder deactivation) unavailable.
- Possible misfires or rough running.
- Higher fuel consumption.
Possible causes
- Faulty cylinder 1 deactivation solenoid.
- Broken wire or corroded connector.
- Low oil level or pressure, or incorrect oil grade.
- Sticking deactivation lifter.
- Faulty control module, less often.
Diagnosis and repair
- Check the oil level and confirm the oil meets the manufacturer specification.
- Inspect the solenoid connector and wiring.
- Measure the solenoid resistance with a multimeter.
- Replace the solenoid or repair the wiring, then have the lifters checked if the fault persists.
- Clear the code and road test at steady light load.
