P0197
PPowertrainEngine Oil Temperature Sensor Low
What does this code mean?
Severity : LowP0197 means the control module sees a voltage that is too low on the engine oil temperature sensor circuit. With this type of sensor, a low voltage usually corresponds to a very high temperature or a short to ground. The ECU can then no longer trust this reading.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Oil temperature reading abnormally high.
- Cooling fan running constantly on some vehicles.
- Possible power limitation.
Possible causes
- Sensor wiring shorted to ground.
- Faulty oil temperature sensor.
- Damaged connector or connector contaminated with oil.
- Genuine oil overheating, less commonly.
- Faulty engine control module, less commonly.
Diagnosis and repair
- On a cold engine, compare oil temperature with coolant temperature.
- Inspect the sensor connector and wiring.
- Measure sensor resistance and compare with factory values.
- Check oil level and rule out genuine overheating.
- Replace the sensor if needed, then clear the code.
