P0521
PPowertrainEngine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Range/Performance
What does this code mean?
Severity : HighP0521 means the engine oil pressure sensor or switch signal does not match the expected range for engine speed and temperature. The ECU compares this value with operating conditions. First confirm that actual oil pressure is correct, because a real loss of pressure can destroy the engine.
Symptoms
- Check engine or oil pressure warning light on.
- Implausible or fluctuating oil pressure reading.
- Engine knocking noises if pressure really is low.
- Limp mode on some vehicles.
Possible causes
- Low oil level or wrong oil viscosity.
- Faulty oil pressure sensor.
- Damaged sensor connector or wiring.
- Worn oil pump or blocked pickup screen.
- Wrong or clogged oil filter.
Diagnosis and repair
- Stop the engine and check the oil level straight away.
- Measure actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.
- Inspect the sensor connector and wiring.
- Replace the sensor if mechanical pressure is correct.
- If real pressure is low, find the mechanical cause before driving.
