DPF Regeneration Frequency Too High

What does this code mean?

Severity : Medium

P2459 indicates that the diesel particulate filter is regenerating too often. The ECU counts regenerations and finds that the interval between cycles is abnormally short. This means the engine is producing too much soot, the filter is loaded with ash, or the load measurement is wrong.

Symptoms

  • DPF or check engine light on.
  • Very frequent regenerations, fan running after switching off.
  • Higher fuel consumption.
  • Possible engine oil dilution with diesel.

Possible causes

  • Excess soot production: leaking injector, EGR valve, airflow sensor, intake leak.
  • DPF loaded with ash at end of life.
  • Faulty differential pressure sensor or hoses.
  • Repeated incomplete regenerations due to short trips.
  • Engine oil not meeting the specified standard.

Diagnosis and repair

  • Check the differential pressure sensor and its hoses.
  • Check injectors, EGR valve, airflow sensor and intake system in live data.
  • Check the oil level, as a rise can indicate fuel dilution.
  • Have the DPF cleaned or replaced if the ash load is too high.
  • Clear the code and monitor the interval between regenerations.
