DPF Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

What does this code mean?

Severity : High

P2002 indicates that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) efficiency on bank 1 is below the expected threshold. The ECU monitors differential pressure across the filter and concludes that soot is no longer being trapped properly. The cause can be a cracked or damaged filter, or a reading distorted by the sensor or its hoses.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or DPF warning light on.
  • Visible black smoke from the exhaust.
  • Possible limp mode with reduced power.
  • Soot visible at the tailpipe.

Possible causes

  • Cracked, melted or damaged DPF.
  • Differential pressure sensor hoses disconnected, split or blocked.
  • Faulty differential pressure sensor.
  • Exhaust leak upstream of the filter.
  • Excess engine smoke from injection or turbo faults.

Diagnosis and repair

  • Inspect the differential pressure sensor and its hoses.
  • Compare differential pressure in live data at idle and under load.
  • Check for exhaust leaks and inspect the filter condition.
  • Replace the sensor, hoses or DPF according to the diagnosis.
  • Clear the code and road test to confirm.
