DPF Restriction: Ash Accumulation

What does this code mean?

Severity : High

P242F indicates a diesel particulate filter restriction caused by ash accumulation. Unlike soot, ash from engine oil additives does not burn off during regeneration. The ECU estimates that the filter holds too much ash, which raises back pressure and reduces the filter's capacity to store soot.

Symptoms

  • DPF or check engine light on.
  • Loss of power and possible limp mode.
  • Increasingly frequent regenerations.
  • Higher fuel consumption.

Possible causes

  • DPF at end of life after high mileage.
  • Engine oil not meeting the specified low-ash standard.
  • Excessive oil consumption through the turbo, piston rings or valve guides.
  • Ash counter not reset after the filter was replaced.

Diagnosis and repair

  • Check the calculated ash load and differential pressure in live data.
  • Check oil consumption and the specification of the oil used.
  • Have the DPF professionally cleaned or replace it.
  • Reset the filter adaptation values with a diagnostic tool after the work.
  • Clear the code and road test.
