PPowertrain1-2 Shift Malfunction
What does this code mean?
Severity : HighP0781 reports a 1-2 shift malfunction on an automatic transmission. The module compares input and output speeds and sees that the resulting gear ratio does not match the one requested, or that the shift takes too long. The fault can be electrical, hydraulic or mechanical.
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission light on.
- Harsh, delayed or missing 1-2 shift.
- Slipping or flaring during the shift.
- Limp mode with a fixed gear.
Possible causes
- Low or degraded transmission fluid.
- Faulty shift solenoid.
- Dirty valve body.
- Worn internal clutch or band.
- Faulty transmission speed sensor.
Diagnosis and repair
- Check transmission fluid level and condition.
- Read other transmission codes, especially solenoid and speed sensor codes.
- Watch input and output speeds in live data during the 1-2 shift.
- Test the solenoids, then have the valve body and clutches inspected if needed.
- Clear the code, run a transmission adaptation if required and road test.
