Engine Speed Input Circuit Fault

What does this code mean?

Severity : Medium

P0725 indicates a fault in the engine speed input circuit used by the automatic transmission control module. The transmission needs engine speed to time shifts and control the torque converter. The signal it receives is missing or implausible, either directly or over the network depending on the vehicle.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission light on.
  • Harsh or erratic shifts.
  • Transmission in limp mode.
  • Erratic tachometer on some vehicles.

Possible causes

  • Faulty engine speed or crankshaft sensor.
  • Damaged wiring or connector between sensor and modules.
  • Communication fault between engine and transmission modules.
  • Poor ground or unstable battery voltage.
  • Transmission control module fault, which is rare.

Diagnosis and repair

  • Read engine and transmission codes, fixing crank sensor codes first.
  • Inspect the relevant wiring and connectors.
  • Compare engine speed as seen by the engine and transmission modules.
  • Check grounds and battery voltage.
  • Repair the cause, clear the code and road test.
