Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit High (Bank 2)

What does this code mean?

Severity : Medium

P0549 reports a high voltage on the exhaust gas temperature sensor circuit, bank 2 sensor 1 (the one closest to the engine or turbo). The control module uses this reading to protect the turbocharger, catalytic converter or diesel particulate filter. A high voltage usually points to an open circuit.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on.
  • Possible loss of power or limp mode.
  • Disturbed DPF regenerations on a diesel.
  • Implausible exhaust temperature in live data.

Possible causes

  • Failed exhaust gas temperature sensor (often open).
  • Broken or heat-damaged wire near the exhaust.
  • Corroded or heat-distorted connector.
  • Short to voltage in the harness.
  • Faulty control module, less often.

Diagnosis and repair

  • Inspect the sensor harness and connector, especially near hot parts.
  • Compare the sensor reading with other temperature sensors on a cold engine.
  • Measure sensor resistance with a multimeter against manufacturer values.
  • Replace the sensor or repair the wiring.
  • Clear the code and road test.
