P0031
PPowertrainO2 Sensor Heater Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
What does this code mean?
Severity : LowP0031 means the voltage is too low on the heater circuit of the bank 1 upstream oxygen sensor (sensor 1). The heater lets the sensor reach operating temperature quickly. If it does not work, mixture control is less accurate when cold and emissions go up.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Slightly higher fuel consumption, especially when cold.
- Possible emissions test failure.
- Few or no driving symptoms.
Possible causes
- Open or shorted sensor heater element.
- Heat damaged sensor wiring.
- Corroded connector.
- Blown oxygen sensor heater fuse.
- Faulty engine control module, less commonly.
Diagnosis and repair
- Check the heater circuit fuse.
- Inspect the sensor wiring and connector.
- Measure heater resistance and compare with factory values.
- Check heater supply and ground control.
- Replace the sensor if the heater is faulty, then clear the code.
