O2 Sensor No Activity (Bank 1 Sensor 3)

What does this code mean?

Severity : Low

P0146 indicates no activity detected from the bank 1, sensor 3 oxygen sensor. This sensor sits further down the exhaust and is mainly used to monitor catalytic converter efficiency. The engine control module sees that its voltage does not change as expected once the engine is warm.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on.
  • Usually no effect on driveability.
  • Possible emissions test failure.

Possible causes

  • Faulty or aged sensor 3 oxygen sensor.
  • Failed sensor heater circuit.
  • Open wiring or damaged connector.
  • Exhaust leak near the sensor.
  • Engine control module fault, which is rare.

Diagnosis and repair

  • Inspect the sensor wiring and connector.
  • Check for exhaust leaks nearby.
  • Watch sensor voltage in live data with a warm engine.
  • Check heater resistance with a multimeter.
  • Replace the sensor if needed, clear the code and road test.
