P0038
PPowertrainO2 Sensor Heater Circuit High (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
What does this code mean?
Severity : LowP0038 means the voltage is too high on the heater circuit of the bank 1 downstream oxygen sensor (sensor 2). This sensor, fitted after the catalytic converter, monitors its efficiency. If the heater does not work properly, the sensor takes longer to deliver a reliable signal.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Usually no driving symptoms.
- Possible emissions test failure.
- Catalyst efficiency code sometimes stored as well.
Possible causes
- Open sensor heater circuit.
- Wiring shorted to voltage.
- Corroded or damaged connector.
- Faulty downstream oxygen sensor.
- Faulty engine control module, less commonly.
Diagnosis and repair
- Inspect the downstream sensor wiring and connector.
- Measure the sensor heater resistance.
- Check heater supply and ground control.
- Replace the sensor if the heater is faulty.
- Clear the code and road test to confirm the repair.
