What does this code mean?
Severity : LowP053A reports an open circuit or control fault on the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) heater. This heater stops the breather passages from freezing or collecting condensation in cold weather. The module does not see the expected current when it switches the heater on.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Usually no driveability symptoms.
- Possible frozen breather in very cold weather.
- Oil consumption or leaks if the breather becomes blocked.
Possible causes
- Open PCV heater element.
- Corroded or disconnected connector.
- Broken wire in the harness.
- Faulty supply fuse or relay.
- Faulty control module, less often.
Diagnosis and repair
- Check the heater supply fuse and relay.
- Inspect the PCV heater connector and wiring.
- Measure the heater resistance with a multimeter.
- Replace the heater or repair the wiring.
- Clear the code and check that it does not return.
