Idle Control System Fault

What does this code mean?

Severity : Medium

P0505 signals a malfunction of the idle control system. The engine control module adjusts the air let in at idle, through an idle air control valve or the electronic throttle, to keep engine speed steady. It sees that actual idle speed strays too far from target or that the actuator does not respond.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on.
  • Idle too high, too low or hunting.
  • Stalling at stop or when decelerating.
  • Hard starting.

Possible causes

  • Dirty throttle body or idle air control valve.
  • Faulty idle valve or throttle motor.
  • Intake vacuum leak.
  • Damaged wiring or connector.
  • Idle relearn not performed after work on the vehicle.

Diagnosis and repair

  • Check hoses and manifold for vacuum leaks.
  • Inspect and clean the throttle body or idle valve.
  • Check the actuator connector and wiring.
  • Watch idle speed and idle command in live data.
  • Replace the actuator if needed, run the relearn and clear the code.
