P0563
PPowertrainSystem Voltage High
What does this code mean?
Severity : MediumP0563 means the engine control module is reading a system voltage higher than expected. The module constantly monitors the supply coming from the alternator and battery. A sustained overvoltage can damage control modules, bulbs and the battery itself, so it should not be ignored.
Symptoms
- Check engine or charging warning light on.
- Bulbs glowing brighter than usual or burning out often.
- Battery getting hot, swelling or giving off a smell.
- Erratic behaviour from some electrical equipment.
Possible causes
- Faulty alternator voltage regulator.
- Poor ground between engine, body and control module.
- Broken or corroded alternator voltage sense wire.
- Battery charger or jump pack connected while the engine runs.
- Faulty engine control module, less commonly.
Diagnosis and repair
- Measure battery voltage with the engine running: it should stay below about 14.8 V.
- Check the ground straps and battery terminals.
- Inspect the alternator wiring and connector.
- Test or replace the regulator or alternator if voltage stays too high.
- Clear the code and confirm charging voltage on a road test.
