High Speed CAN Bus (-) Voltage High

What does this code mean?

Severity : High

U0008 means the low line (CAN-) of the high speed CAN bus has a voltage that is too high. This bus links the main control modules, such as engine, transmission and ABS. A faulty line can disrupt all communication and trigger many warning lights and malfunctions.

Symptoms

  • Many warning lights on the dashboard.
  • Hard starting or no start.
  • Engine or transmission limp mode.
  • Several lost communication codes.

Possible causes

  • CAN- line shorted to battery voltage or to CAN+.
  • Pinched, chafed or water damaged wiring.
  • Corroded control module connector.
  • Faulty module disrupting the bus.
  • Poorly wired aftermarket accessory on the network.

Diagnosis and repair

  • Measure CAN+ and CAN- voltages at the diagnostic socket.
  • Check bus termination resistance, about 60 ohms with the battery disconnected.
  • Unplug modules one at a time to isolate the one disrupting the bus.
  • Inspect the harness for chafing or moisture.
  • Repair the wiring or replace the faulty module, then clear the codes.
