EVAP Purge Control Valve Circuit Fault

What does this code mean?

Severity : Low

P0443 points to an electrical fault in the control circuit of the evaporative emission (EVAP) purge valve. This valve lets fuel vapour stored in the charcoal canister flow into the intake to be burned. The engine control module has detected an open circuit or an unexpected voltage.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on.
  • Possible slight fuel smell.
  • Occasionally rough idle.
  • Trouble filling the tank on some vehicles.
  • Often no noticeable symptom.

Possible causes

  • Faulty purge valve.
  • Unplugged, corroded or broken connector.
  • Open or shorted wiring.
  • Blown supply fuse.
  • Faulty driver inside the engine control module, which is rare.

Diagnosis and repair

  • Inspect the purge valve connector and wiring.
  • Measure the valve coil resistance with a multimeter.
  • Check the supply voltage and the control signal from the module.
  • Command the valve on and off with a scan tool to confirm it works.
  • Replace the valve if needed, clear the code and road test.
