P0287
PPowertrainCylinder 9 Contribution/Balance Fault
What does this code mean?
Severity : MediumP0287 signals a contribution or balance fault on cylinder 9. The engine control module compares how much each cylinder adds to engine rotation, often by watching crankshaft speed changes. Cylinder 9 is producing more or less than the others, which usually points to fuel delivery or compression.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Rough idle or vibration.
- Loss of power.
- Exhaust smoke on diesel engines.
- Higher fuel consumption.
Possible causes
- Dirty, leaking or faulty cylinder 9 injector.
- Damaged injector wiring or connector.
- Low compression on cylinder 9.
- Ignition fault on that cylinder on a petrol engine.
- Vacuum leak near the affected cylinder.
Diagnosis and repair
- Check per cylinder corrections in live data.
- Inspect the cylinder 9 injector connector and wiring.
- Test the injector, for example with a balance or leak off test.
- Measure cylinder 9 compression.
- Repair or replace the faulty part, clear the code and road test.
