P0403
PPowertrainEGR Control Circuit Malfunction
What does this code mean?
Severity : MediumP0403 indicates a fault in the EGR valve electrical control circuit. The ECU monitors the voltage and current in the circuit driving the valve or its solenoid, and detects an abnormal value such as an open or short circuit. The valve can then no longer be controlled properly.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Rough idle or hesitation.
- Loss of power, sometimes limp mode.
- Higher exhaust emissions.
Possible causes
- EGR valve connector unplugged, corroded or damaged.
- Wiring broken, chafed or shorted.
- Faulty EGR motor or solenoid winding.
- Blown fuse or faulty supply relay.
- Less commonly, an engine ECU fault.
Diagnosis and repair
- Visually inspect the EGR valve connector and wiring harness.
- Measure supply voltage and ground at the connector with a multimeter.
- Check the valve winding resistance against the manufacturer's values.
- Repair the wiring, or replace the EGR valve if it is out of specification.
- Clear the code and confirm the valve responds to an actuator test.
