P0118
PPowertrainEngine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit High
What does this code mean?
Severity : MediumP0118 indicates high voltage on engine coolant temperature sensor circuit 1. The engine control module reads this as a very cold engine, which is usually wrong. This upsets fuelling, idle speed and cooling fan control, and the fan is often forced on as a precaution.
Symptoms
- Check engine light on.
- Cooling fan running constantly.
- Incorrect temperature gauge reading.
- Hard hot starts or higher fuel consumption.
- Possible black smoke.
Possible causes
- Faulty coolant temperature sensor.
- Unplugged or corroded connector.
- Open wiring or open sensor ground.
- Engine control module fault, which is rare.
Diagnosis and repair
- Inspect the sensor connector and wiring.
- Compare the reading in live data with actual engine temperature.
- Measure sensor resistance with a multimeter.
- Check signal and ground continuity back to the module.
- Replace the sensor if needed, clear the code and road test.
