OBD, Bench, Boot: the 3 ECU reading modes explained

Complete guide to ECU read/write methods. When to use OBD, Bench or Boot mode, and the precautions to take.

Three methods, three access levels

Reading an engine control unit (ECU) can be done in three ways. Each method has its advantages, risks, and use cases.

OBD Mode (On-Board Diagnostics)

The simplest and most common method:

  • Connection: via the vehicle's OBD-II port (under the steering wheel)
  • Advantage: no need to remove the ECU
  • Speed: reading in a few minutes
  • Risk: low (standard communication)
  • Limitation: some recent ECUs block OBD writing (anti-tuning protections)

This is the preferred method when available. It works for most pre-2020 vehicles.

Bench Mode

When OBD is locked or insufficient:

  • Connection: directly to ECU pins, removed from the vehicle
  • Advantage: full memory access, bypasses OBD protections
  • Speed: varies by protocol
  • Risk: medium (requires precise wiring)
  • Required: ECU removal + bench wiring

Bench has become essential with new-gen ECUs (Bosch MG1, MD1, Continental Simos 18) that restrict OBD access.

Boot Mode

The deepest access level:

  • Connection: direct access to the processor via its boot pins (BSL/Boot pins)
  • Advantage: total access, even on the most locked ECUs
  • Speed: slower than other methods
  • Risk: high (physical circuit board manipulation, damage risk)
  • Required: ECU case opening, possible soldering

Boot is the last resort when neither OBD nor Bench work. It requires solid hardware handling experience.

Which method for which ECU?

ECU OBD Bench Boot
Bosch EDC17 Yes Yes Yes
Bosch MED17 Yes Yes Yes
Bosch MG1/MD1 No Yes Yes
Continental Simos 12/PCR Yes Yes Yes
Continental Simos 18 No Yes Yes
Delphi DCM3.5/6.2 Yes Yes Yes
Denso (Toyota) Partial Yes Yes

Practical advice

Always start with OBD. If it doesn't work, move to Bench. Boot should only be used as a last resort or for specific operations (virgin, clone).
